Koprivshtitsa – village of the Bulgarian national revival

Koprivshtitsa is a historic town in Bulgaria, located in the Sredna Gora mountains, about 110 km east of the capital city Sofia. The town is known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture, as well as for its role in the Bulgarian National Revival. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876.

 

Koprivshtitsa has a rich cultural heritage, and it played an important part in the struggle for Bulgarian independence from Ottoman rule. Many of the town’s buildings and houses are museums, showcasing the life and traditions of the local people. Most of the monuments, 383 in all,  have been restored to their original appearance. Some of the most notable museums include the Oslekov House, the Lyutov House, and the Todor Kableshkov House. Collections of ethnographical treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been preserved.

 

With its historical significance, Koprivshtitsa is a popular tourist destination, with numerous restaurants, cafes, and guesthouses. The town hosts an annual folklore festival in August, which features traditional music, dance, and costumes.

 

The natural surroundings of Koprivshtitsa are also popular with visitors, with hiking trails leading to scenic viewpoints and waterfalls. The town is also close to the Buzludzha Monument, a Soviet-era monument located on a mountain peak, which has become a popular destination for urban explorers and photographers.

 

Overall, Koprivshtitsa is a charming and historic town that offers a glimpse into Bulgaria’s rich cultural heritage.
